Banstead Downs and Banstead Woods Taxi Drop-Off: Where to Tell the Driver to Stop

Most people start at Holly Lane car park, near Chipstead. The postcode is CR5 3NR. Parking there is free, and Chipstead station is only about 500 metres away. The council looks after the woods.

One thing catches people out. That postcode covers a big area, and walking groups say it isn’t exact. So don’t just say “Banstead Woods” when you book a taxi. Say Holly Lane car park, Chipstead and the driver will know exactly where to go.

Banstead Downs and Banstead Woods Aren’t the Same Place

It’s an easy mistake, and it can cost you a wasted morning.

Banstead Woods is old woodland near Chipstead. It has the nature trail, plus a Narnia trail with a lion and a wardrobe. Banstead Downs is open common land nearer Banstead village. The long Millennium Trail to Horley starts there, and you can join the Downs walks from Banstead station too.

They’re a couple of miles apart, so tell us which one you’re going to.

Taxi or Minicab?

Either one will do the job. The only real difference is that a minicab has to be pre-booked, while a taxi can be hailed in the street. At a quiet car park there’s no rank anyway, so book ahead whichever you choose.

If you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, just say when you book. The trails are hilly and uneven, but we can still drop you at the car park.

Getting to Banstead Woods Parkrun on a Saturday

Parkrun here starts at 9:00am every Saturday. It’s a free 5km, two laps on mostly woodland paths, with a few hills. Do check the parkrun website for the latest details before you set off.

I’d book your Banstead Downs and Banstead Woods taxi drop-off the evening before. Aim to arrive around 30 minutes early, so you’ve got time to warm up and find everyone. And bring your barcode.

Getting Home Afterwards

The woods are quiet, so don’t count on a car being free when you finish. Book your return at the same time as your Banstead Downs and Banstead Woods taxi drop-off, and you won’t be standing around in muddy kit.

Just give the driver a rough finish time. Parkrun is easy to guess. The nature trail is about 3 miles and usually takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

If you fancy a coffee first, the Ramblers Rest pub on Outwood Lane is nearby. Ask the driver to stop there on the way home.

A Few Little Things Worth Knowing

Paths can get muddy after rain, so bring a bag for your shoes. Dogs are welcome but should be on leads, so let us know if one’s coming along. There are no toilets on the nature trail route.

Pushchairs and wheelchairs are tricky. Walking groups say the trails aren’t suitable for either.
